biography
Olivier Mosset, born 1944 in Bern, is a Swiss painter of monochromatic and geomatrical paintings. After moving to Paris in 1965 he founded the artists group BMPT together with Daniel Buren, Michel Parmentier and Niele Toroni to break with the Nouvelle Ecole de Paris, that mostly incorporated abstract painting in their works. Mosset gained attention by painting 200 circular paintings which he painted the same way from 1966 to 1974: Black circular rings on white background. From 1972 he switched to paintings with vertical stripes, which reflect his involvement with Daniel Buren's painting. But Mosset's tendency towards hard reduction culminated in the monochrome phase, which he entered in 1977 with a large-format red painting for the 'Biennale de Paris'. Since then Mosset has been regarded as the figurehead of radical painting. In the mid-1980s, two-colour abstract paintings followed; at that time, Mosset represented, among other painters, the Neo-Geo movement. In the 1990s, Mosset began to work with 'shaped canvas' paintings, but also with wall paintings and sculptures.
His works were shown at various institutions such as the Kunstmuseum (Basel), Musée des Beaux Arts (Lausanne), Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst (Zurich), Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain (Geneva) and Kunsthalle Zurich.
