biography
The American painter Brice Marden, born 1938 in Bronxville, New York, studied at the Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts from 1958-1961 and at Yale University of Art and Architecture in New Haven from 1961-1963. In 1966 he was assistant to Robert Rauschenberg and from 1969 to 1974 he taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York. As a further development of color field painting, Marden created monochrome pictures since the mid-1960s, usually by mixing several gray clouded areas of color to form a work. By using wax, the artist achieved dull surfaces which, according to his statement, do not reflect light, but look as if they absorb light and at the same time emit it. Since the mid-1980s, Marden turned away from strict, monochrome painting and let oscillating lines appear in his color fields, which cover the canvases like net structures and are inspired by Eastern calligraphy.
His works were shown at various institutions including The Museum of Modern Art (New York), Hamburger Bahnhof (Berlin), The Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco) and The Salomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York).
