MIQUEL BARCELÓ'S GRAN ELEFANDRET  ON PARADEPLATZ ZURICH

Tobias Mueller Modern Art is delighted to bring Miquel Barceló’s monumental bronze sculpture Gran Elefandret to Zurich for the duration of the summer.

After ‘balancing on its trunk’ in New York, London, Madrid, Barcelona, Avignon and Salamanca the sculpture is now shown at Paradeplatz Zurich on the occasion of the city’s public art project Neuer Norden Zürich under the direction of Christoph Doswald. The installation of the sculpture has been made possible by the generous support of Leonhard Fischer and Thomas Bock.

Miquel Barceló on Gran Elefandret: ‘If a huge blind giant with a monstrous hand could feel up this sculpture, he would say it is definitely a bronze tree. From afar we can see a mass, a ball on a pole: hence, a tree. When exposed in a landscape or a garden it looks like a tree in white bloom – the elephant is recognized a few moments later. First, a white tree, then, very quickly, an elephant. It is in this moment that something exceptional happens, something that is part of childhood. Pre-verbal. As fast as a spark. It doesn’t last. It is the contrast between the splendor of this sensation and the weight of the metal pachyderm that particularly pleases me. Gravity and Grace is the title of an extraordinary book by Simone Weil. Maybe it’s the subtitle of this work.’
