Martin Kippenberger is Essen’s most important post-war artist. Growing up there as the son of the director of the Zeche Katharina mine, the young Kippenberger was inspired to become an artist by numerous visits to Museum Folkwang with his father. Now, for the first time in years, his late magnum opus 'The Happy End of Franz Kafka’s ‘Amerika' – a large-scale installation with the dimensions of a sporting arena – returns to Germany, and to the artist’s home town. This work – Kippenberger’s most important and the result of collaboration with numerous artists between 1992 and 1994 – is being presented in its impressive entirety in Museum Folkwang’s large exhibition hall.
