Julian Schnabel

biography

Julian Schnabel, born 1951 in New York, is an American painter and film director, co-founder of Neo-Expressionism and one of the most famous representatives of this movement. Schnabel participated in the independent study program of the Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan in the late 1970s, an exclusive support program that was an important career start for numerous artists, critics, and curators. In the 1990s Schnabel devoted himself to feature films. In his paintings Schnabel’s gestural application of paint to large canvases, his use of unconventional materials and his style, both abstract and figurative, is comparable to the artistic practice of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Eric Fischl and David Salle. He paints on broken glass and porcelain, on velvet, used canvas, tent tarpaulins or on fluffy carpets.

Schnabel lives and works in New York.

His works have been shown at various institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), The Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), The Museum of Modern Art (New York), The Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), Museo Reina Sofia (Madrid), The Tate Modern (London) and Centre Pompidou (Paris).
